ABSTRACT

The purpose of the research is to find out how mothers define themselves regarding

paid or unpaid employment and motherhood. Specifically, the research sought

to establish what it means to be a good mother and/or a good worker, and how

these two roles may relate. The research involved in-depth analysis of the views

and comments towards motherhood and work following face-to-face interviews. A

theoretical sampling strategy was used rather than a representative one (Miles and

Huberman1994). I interviewed 70 lone mothers, split evenly between London and

Berlin (see chapter 1 and appendix).
