ABSTRACT

It has become a usual claim of privileged society that education brings about human capital for the attainment of the higher aspirations in life. While this claim is true, it is not a necessary condition of social relations. It was observed by Bowles and Gintis (1975) that if the elitist consequences of social differentiation caused by education were included in social accounting, then the net return from education could even be negative in the national accounting on social returns from education. A  similar remark was made by Mehmet. Mehmet comments that the modern Western universities, despite their great feats in the sciences and technology, have served the cause of capitalist globalization in its material form. The independence of ethics and morality in this regard was marked by Mehmet’s explanation that universities ought to be left pursue secular knowledge. Research then ought to be based on such secular knowledge. Furthermore, Mehmet argues that universities ought not to be constrained by labour market pressures. This would otherwise turn university learning into commodity models driven by virtual knowledge.
