ABSTRACT

This conclusion provides an overview of key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book analyses the phenomenon of location-independence through a group of global nomads representative of a variety of ways in which location-independence can be realised. It discusses the theoretical framework used, the findings, and their deeper societal and academic implications. The book presents the discrepancies that arise because location-independence gains different meanings depending on the context. Global nomads may represent themselves both as agents and subjects to power. It summarises the forms of freedom that location-independence can offer to global nomads, the counterparts that exist in the lifestyles of the settled, and how theories of second modernity, structuration, power and subjectivity have both helped and hindered the analysis. Global nomads are not unique in their attempts at self-exclusion, as many alternative lifestyles also aim for a partial social exclusion.
