ABSTRACT

Philippine komiks (comics) have been around since the 1920s and have entertained generations of Filipinos with epic stories of heroes defeating their adversaries and heartwarming tales of local life. The visual styles of komiks also vary. Tony Velasquez’s iconic Filipino man, Kenkoy, had a cartoon-like flair akin to Blondie, while the local superman, Captain Barbell by Mars Ravelo, had hyperrealist visuals mimicking the style of Jack Kirby.
