ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book emphasizes the dynamic nature of transport and mobility as something that is characterized by key geographical concepts. It highlights how it is possible to study the issues with reference to broader social and economic processes. The book relates to the geographical context of movement, of not being sedentary, but regularly engaging in travel, tourism and even relocation. Sustainable place-making and place-keeping are clearly important as exercises in creating valuable places to live. The book analyzes transport and mobility in context – through the shaping of changing economic processes of production and consumption. It explores the individualistic approaches to behavioural change are a limited response to the challenge of engaging publics in a process of change. The book explores how researchers need to place greater emphasis on dwelling as key construct for making the aspirations of sustainable mobility a more realistic vision.
