ABSTRACT
This chapter provides a critical analysis of how people's understandings of contemporary transport geography and mobility can inform their understandings of contemporary and forthcoming debates on reshaping their society for a lower-carbon future. It presents a contemporary transport planning policy context for what people have come to know as sustainable mobility, again focusing on the UK. The chapter begins with a background of the role of individuals in responding to policies relating to sustainable mobility. It then explores the transport-planning policy development. Aspects of contemporary policy instruments, such as, Local Transport Plans, the role of target-setting, and the process of development control are considered. The chapter shows how national transport-planning policy is implemented through the development of Local Transport Plans at a more localised level. Target-setting is a relatively recent phenomenon in transport planning policy, over the last 15 years or so, such as through Local Transport Plans where they constitute one of the key aspects.
