ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the family policies in the Greece from a gender perspective. It presents an overview of the female employment in Greece as well as a list of existing policies and the measures that are considered important for the reconciliation of work and family life. It presents some of the findings of the Multiple Aspects of Gender Equality (MAGEEQ) project, a European collaboration which resulted in a study entitled Policy Frames and Implementation Problems: The Case of Gender Mainstreaming. Socio-economic developments in the EU countries have enhanced the social and productive role of women through rising educational standards and their increasing participation in the labour market. The basic premise in the idea of the reconciliation of family and work life is to develop structures harmonising professional and family life. It is also believed that the improvement of women's participation in the labour market contributes to the prosperity of national labour force and the economic development of the country.
