ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the discrimination of migrant workers based on gender as they emerge in the complex reality of the Italian regional labour markets. Labour force survey (LFS) examine the labour market performance of resident migrants in comparison with that of the Italian population. The Italian Continuous LFS is a large national sample survey of the resident population which is continuously updated to take into account migrants who are resident in Italy since 2005. For more than a century Italy has been one of largest emigration countries in Europe contributing to a significant amount of labour force in the United States, Australia as well as in the richer European neighbouring countries. An overview of the employment conditions of migrants shows their substantial 'employment frailty', that is a high precariousness in accessing job opportunities, which is particularly high for women. The SUD survey, the largest survey on migrants in Italy, analyses the adult population originating from LDCs and CEE countries.
