ABSTRACT

I am grateful to the Council of the Hakluyt Society for agreeing to publish this edition of Wainwright’s ‘Diary’ which has been overlooked, at least in the English-speaking world, for over 130 years. In particular, I would like to acknowledge the advice and help of the Series Editors, Professors Will Ryan and Michael Brennan. Professor Brennan has had the major responsibility for this volume and I have benefited from his patient guidance. One of the Society’s Vice-presidents, Dr John Bockstoce, drew the attention of Professor Brennan and myself to the fact that two letters of Wainwright’s had been offered for sale at auction. Recognizing the importance of the letters in connection with its existing collection of materials relating to David Livingstone, the National Library of Scotland secured the letters and a carte de visite of Wainwright’s. All this was achieved through the good offices of Dr Iain Brown, Principal Curator of Manuscripts at the Library, who, together with his colleagues, afforded me help in securing copies of the materials. I acknowledge with gratitude the permission extended to me by the National Library to quote from as well as to reproduce as Figs 1 and 6 in this edition part of one letter together with the carte de visite photograph of Wainwright. At the Royal Geographical Society, I received kind help from Ms Pauline Hubner of the Society’s Picture Library and I acknowledge the permission of the Society to reproduce Figs 7 and 8 of which it holds the copyright. At the Scottish National Memorial to David Livingstone at Blantyre, Ms Karen Carruthers was interested and helpful and I acknowledge the permission of the National Trust for Scotland who now manage the Memorial, to reproduce Figs 2 and 5. The map showing Wainwright’s route was professionally drawn for me by Mrs Julie Snook who most patiently and efficiently interpreted my wishes.
