ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book deals with the finer grain of flirting with space and inflects elements of the journeys that happen to individuals in doing so and in terms of creativity. It works by taking art thinking outside the confines of traditional art theory and engaging in particular with social anthropology and cultural geographies, as well as aspects of performance theory. The book presents a contribution to the growing awareness of a need to try and engage the debates surrounding landscape across geographical, anthropological, cultural and art theory amongst others. It begins by considering different debates on landscape through the notion of spacing particularly in terms of how we understand artwork and representation, insistently in comparison with wider kinds of practice. The book concludes with an afterword of reflection on performativity in relation to the ways in which this evaluation of practice was progressed.
