ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides an analysis of the historical and political forces at work in flamenco's consolidation as a regional symbol and as a universal form of heritage. It explores the complexities of Andalusian regionalism through music. In recent years, flamenco has become the most prominent marker of cultural identity in Andalusia, the southernmost region of Spain. The book examines the current institutional development of flamenco framed by the theoretical perspectives of political geography. Building on the work of existing scholars, it discusses the Andalusian Government's most recent initiatives towards the institutionalisation of flamenco. The book explores the inscription of flamenco on the Representative List as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (ICH) by UNESCO in 2010. Finally, it explores how flamenco's institutional support has been received and problematised, drawing on ethnographic research both online and in Andalusia.
