ABSTRACT

The artists who are benefiting from increased governmental support in the wake of the UNESCO declaration are pleased, but those who have been passed over in the distribution of governmental support for flamenco artistry are expressing increased frustration and resentment. The Andalusian Departments of Culture and Education have called for a stronger curriculum of flamenco education in public schools, though they have not yet clarified and made explicit the goals or contents of that curriculum. In other words, the varied responses in the Spanish press to the UNESCO declaration indicate that debate and discord about flamenco is not just continuing. The artists who are benefiting from increased governmental support in the wake of the UNESCO declaration are pleased, but those who have passed over in the distribution of governmental support for flamenco artistry are expressing increased frustration and resentment. Localistas worry that UNESCO recognition of flamenco as an Andalusian treasure diminish the cultural significance of their particular provinces.
