ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a case study which aims to shed light on father-daughter relationship and its impacts on business inheritance. The case study explains how Edna Martinez Sahkrani balances her father's legacy. She inherited the management of her father's tree plantation business when he passed away in 2004. Clearly, women play a dominant role in the Philippine economy. This fact has come into being because the role of the Philippine woman in business as well as in politics is unlike many countries, where women are still struggling to be recognized. The family institution in the Philippines is extended to include relatives through consanguinity and affinity. This extended clan-like nature of the family is a defining characteristic of Filipino culture and society. There are three major nationalities that have shaped Philippine culture: the Spanish colonizers, the American liberators, and the Chinese entrepreneurs.
