ABSTRACT

The Logics of Action framework is an analytical approach which is suited to overcoming the classical dualism between structure and agency in social science theory. The basic assumption is: there are no structures without agents and no agents without structures, and both categories are intertwined according to a notion of human interests. In order to transfer this general theoretical concept into a concrete analytical framework to understand the Egyptian transformation process, a set of preliminary hypotheses have been developed. First, the logic of social change has its roots in the development of human interests. Second, the articulation of human interests by revolutionary social movements is mediated by respective challenges, choices, and opportunities. Third, changes in social structures are the logical outcomes of changing social relations in different spheres of society. The overthrow of the Mubarak regime was initiated by social and democratic concerns, mirroring the interests of modernised social classes in political freedoms and emancipation from restrictive ethics.
