ABSTRACT

Introduction In this chapter I examine the political, media and academic discourses responding to the ‘Sydney gang rapes’. As noted in the previous chapter, the ‘Sydney gang rape’ trials provoked intense media scrutiny of the criminal justice system as well as opening up debate about the status of multiculturalism. The rapes also led to two pieces of law reform. I will start with an analysis of the political debate that accompanied this law reform before moving to an in-depth exploration of the various media discourses.
