ABSTRACT
This chapter highlights public libraries that help people develop a critical capacity. The publications of the Glasgow Media Group, now the Glasgow University Media Unit would make a good starting point. The Group comprises people employed in the unit at Glasgow University, plus some broadcasters and journalists. The aim of its work is, and was, to promote and develop methodologies and research in the area of media and communications. A good library collection staffed by knowledgeable librarians can provide access to high quality material and make the great works available for people to use and experience. By supporting writers of quality, and through promoting a rich and diverse culture the library is providing a true public good. Nailer argues, 'the habit of creativity and the spirit of inquiry, the interest in and concern for others, which define civilized society, are relevant around the world'. Culture and creativity can help communities and nations celebrate diversity.
