ABSTRACT

Digital technologies are unleashing new economic and social dynamics. A country's industrial might no longer determine its future. The prizes will go to highly adaptive leadership; leadership with spirit; leadership with purpose. Equipping organisations to tackle the future will require a management revolution no less momentous than the one that spawned modern industry. The iconic status attributed to people like Bill Gates and Steve Jobs has encouraged notion that if a company finds the right leader, everything else will fall into place. The impact of the global financial crisis has not only been profound, but enduring. The crisis has not led to any fundamental reappraisal of the nature of capitalism, or how to 'govern' it. Income inequality is already growing because high-skill workers benefit disproportionately when technology complements their jobs. This poses challenges for employers and policymakers: how to help existing workers acquire new skills, and how to prepare future generations for a workplace stuffed full of artificial intelligence (AI).
