ABSTRACT

This chapter proposes a new construct with which to understand better what goes on in the life and times of organisations, especially when it comes to change management. 'Environments of Value' are primarily the internal environment of the organisation but that system cannot be separated from the interconnected system of the external environment in which it is set. Leaders need to build work-related environments in which stakeholders are given dignity. If creativity is about having ideas and innovation is about turning those ideas into solutions, then enterprise is about making the solutions sustainable. Almost every public sector organisation has a diversity and equality officer of some sort. The notion of an 'environment of value' is one that stresses a community of valuers. Promoting dignity at work is crucial for creating environments of value. Invoking the contrast pole assists conceptual clarity by highlighting the psychological formats that create a sense of perceiving oneself as disvalued.
