ABSTRACT

The period 1871 to 1890 was one of mixed fortunes for the Muspratt family and their businesses. Edmund and Frances continued to extend their family, as did Frederic and his new wife, Elizabeth, but these joys were tempered by the overwhelming sadness at the death of James and his three sons, Sheridan, Richard and Frederic. Members of the family continued to travel widely, with Edmund undertaking extensive trips through Europe, including to the Bavarian Highlands, and to Montreal in 1884 for the Annual Meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science (BAAS), accompanied by his brother-in-law George Harley.
