ABSTRACT

In June 1592 thirteen sail of English corsairs were haunting the coastline about Havana; four of these were ships set forth by Lord Thomas Howard under the command of Benjamin Wood. Lord Thomas Howard's fleet consisted of the Challenger of London, Benjamin Wood captain and John Tomlyn master; the Mineral of London, Richard Vavasour captain and Richard Cawson master; and the Flight of Plymouth, Thomas Turner captain and Robert Abraham master. Wood, in command of the expedition, is not known to have had any lasting connection with Howard, but two of the other captains—Vavasour and Coche—were Howard's men. Thus with some 350 tons of shipping and about 200 men Wood left England in April, 1592. Myddelton and Barrett had reached Hicacos Point by a route similar to that taken by Wood, and with more or less similar luck; they had left England a little before Wood's fleet, which they had met in the Canaries.
