ABSTRACT

This anonymous pamphlet appeared in three editions in 1679, 1680 and 1810. In the last two editions, it featured alongside Sheres’ A Discourse Touching Tangier. It is difficult to establish the exact date of the events described in the narrative. However, from a reference to a retreat operation commanded by Palmes Fairborne, it can be surmised that the pamphlet may have been written sometime in late 1675 or early 1676. Details of this incident which occurred in September 1675 are supplied in another pamphlet, The Present State of Tangier. The retreat, it must be remembered, came after an ill-advised sortie ordered by Governor Inchiquin to plunder the cattle of neighbouring tribes.
