ABSTRACT

This account also describes episodes of fighting between the garrison and the Moroccan troops on 27 October. The 3 November date stated in the pamphlet is clearly a mistake. The celebratory tone of the narrative and the pompous style of its opening passage suggest that the pamphlet was probably written by someone who lacked firsthand information and aimed at creating an appealing image of the garrison. In particular, the figures presented of the size of the Moroccan army (estimated at 30,000) and the casualties they suffered (2,000 killed) are nowhere close to the official figures stated in other pamphlets. Details of the garrison’s sally which is said to have started around midnight are also inaccurate.
