ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the concept of disability in the context of electronic performance support. Terms such as disability, accessibility, exclusion, inclusion and community are explored together with ideas such as adaptability, personalisation and universal design. We describe some of the existing categories of device that are often used as assistive technologies and also consider novel uses of standard computer and mobile technologies (as performance support aids) in the context of disability and accessibility. These are particularly important in relation to developing personal and adaptive learning environments for people with special needs – thereby providing ‘access for all’ through the use of appropriately designed performance aids.
