ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on voting rights. It addresses how secure is franchise as a right in the United States. The chapter examines the constitutional status of voting and it contends that the right to vote in the United States is hardly as protected. In the United States, civic engagement runs the range from talking about politics, voting, volunteering on a campaign, joining a group, giving money, to running for office. The right of the people to rule is the essence of a democracy. In a direct democracy it would be the right to directly rule and make law or policy choices. According to the Supreme Court, states or the government need to structure elections to promote their fairness and honesty. Overall, the current jurisprudence regarding voting rights is out of touch with current conceptions of democracy, social structures, and technology.
