ABSTRACT

This chapter looking at two divisions which fought in Second Artois: the 77e and 34e Divisions d'Infanterie (DIs). The division being tactical unit in 1915, a review of the experiences of one very effective division (77e) and one largely ineffective division (34e) provides a range of experience from which to draw conclusions about the value of French military system in 1915. The chapter permits a closer examination of infantry life and procedures during Second Artois such as more standard battle narratives may not be able to provide, thus further enriching the historiography of Second Artois, and French army in general. 77e DI was one of elite formations in the French army. Composed of highly motivated, elite soldiers it was the logical choice to lead the attack on Givenchy-en-Gohelle and Vimy Ridge in the opening phase of Second Artois. On 1 May 77e DI issued its final op-order for the attack which would take place on 9 May.
