ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with a special case of 'super-agility' which requires an additional category of market segment and a corresponding supply chain configuration. Hau Lee's highly acclaimed seminal article on 'The Triple-A Supply Chain' has been out in the domain for five years, during which time our understanding of how supply chains function has increased exponentially. By better understanding what is going on inside the human dimension of supply chains, it becomes possible to move from a purely reactive to a more predictive level. Lee posits that 'only those companies that build Agile, Adaptable, and Aligned supply chains get ahead of the competition'. The chapter explains the two variants such as 'business event' and 'emergency response/humanitarian' supply chains. It presents the humanitarian variant of fully flexible supply chains. It describes the concept of 'dynamic alignment' that goes well beyond Lee's narrower interpretation which focuses mainly on aligning the 'interests' of all firms in their respective supply chains.
