ABSTRACT

The Jebel Ali Port and Industrial complex replicated other regional prototypes and models, but its machinistic qualities, ambitious scale, and morphological repercussions transformed the development into a new kind of urban and industrial product that would consequently be replicated in Dubai, the greater region, and beyond. In late 1966, a radio station was constructed at the Jebel Ali location for communication, although the location was still a contested territory with Abu Dhabi. The Port Rashid expansion was to make it the largest in the Gulf region with 37 berths. Shortly afterward, Jebel Ali was announced to become the largest man-made port in the world, with 15 kilometers of waterfront and 67 berths. The port design for Mina Jebel Ali was based on research conducted on a 1:120 hydraulic model constructed at the Hydraulic Research Station at Wallingford in the United Kingdom.
