ABSTRACT

The observers who conduct advanced driver courses aim to produce a candidate for the advanced test who can display ‘quiet efficiency’. The observer performs in a ‘coaching’ rather than ‘training’ role. They are not teaching someone how to drive a car. The candidate already has a driving licence. The observer's role is to refine their skills and introduce new concepts and more advanced skills to enable the associate to achieve a higher standard. In doing this the observer will be acting in the role of a coach, co-ordinator and adviser but not instructor.
