ABSTRACT

He Daniel dreambook is commonly accepted as the earliest Byzantine oneirocriticon; some scholars even consider it the basic source text for all medieval dreambooks in both the East and the West. The manuscript tradition of the Nicephorean dreambook overturned all previous scholarship on the interrelationship between the dreambooks of Astrampsychus, Germanus, and Nicephorus. The verses ascribed to the Astrampsychus dreambook are related to the b family of Nicephorus, while the Germanus dreambook is an independent witness. What variations and differences we see in the dreambooks are attributable to their copyists. Germanus it was better known and was a hero to the Orthodox Church because of his pro-icon positions. His credentials, in other words, made him an excellent choice as author. As in the case of the Germanus dreambook, the earliest date that we can assign to this treatise is the earliest date of its latest known source, which is Achmet. The terminus ante quem is the codex's date of 1400.
