Snelling next emerged in the November 1940 Sydney newsletter of international advertising agency J. Walter Thompson, which announced that ‘Doug B. Snelling’ had arrived in Sydney ‘four months ago . . . after visiting Batavia [Jakarta] and other islands’1 and was now the ‘publicity man’ for a new radio talent quest programme, Australia’s Amateur Hour, ‘to go over the national hook-up’ on Thursday evenings.2
