ABSTRACT

Introduction As Martin Pistorius refl ected, people with disabilities increasingly rely on ICT for communication. In this chapter we will initially outline the ramifi cations for self-representation within the highly specialised fi eld of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) before moving on to consider existing psychological and sociological theories underpinning identity formation. The focus will be on the development of identity during adolescence and young adulthood and the impact of online opportunities, especially for young people with disabilities.
