ABSTRACT

Introduction With the increasing take up of digital technology in China, various social groups are presented with new opportunities to seek equality and participation. With digital devices such as computers and smartphones, and digital literacy as simple as reading and writing online texts, particularly in conjunction with social media, Chinese non-professional citizens can self-represent and speak to the public directly using personal and experiential knowledge. Voluntary online self-representations of diverse forms are able to portray a range of social concerns as well as demonstrate activist and advocacy potentials. A prominent example of this, particularly as it relates to people with disabilities, can be seen in the activities of the Beijing One Plus One Disabled Persons’ Cultural Development Centre (OPO) over the last ten years. The OPO is an NGO and a non-offi cial disabled persons organisation (DPO) run by and for people with disabilities.
