ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the way in which cultural tools can be used in developing the musician. It explore the realities of teaching in a room of 25-30 pupils of mixed ability and the strategies used in adapting to each student's individual needs. The notion of cultural tools is held by a number of writers to be crucial for all knowledge development. The cultural tool box is located inside the frame and is where the tools are kept, including those provided by the culture, those needed in the culture and those used for learning. Group projects form a major part of the teaching in Nordic countries. Represented as a big oval in the model, this is used to indicate the way in which learning is framed and prompts questions around the sort of musical culture with which the learners are familiar.
