ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at that particular period in the history of London Transport when this became the reality and what the signs were that it was happening. It is a critical first step in the management of design and could be of real value to any company wanting to understand the state of design in their situation. During the early years of the twentieth century a number of companies providing public transport amalgamated into a larger privately-owned organization called the Underground Group. They established a trading mark comprising a tramcar in the centre, and underground railway lines leading to it. The Underground Group also developed an architectural style for their new stations and tube lines which opened in 1906. In 1933 the Underground Group amalgamated with all other underground railways, bus and train operators in London and formed one new monopoly public body, responsible to the local government authority.
