ABSTRACT

This chapter considers some of the themes emerging from CETLD research into the educational possibilities and advantages of technology and does not attempt to capture in any detail the technical issues involved. It explores somewhat impressionistically the creative opportunities and pragmatic benefits and problems that arose in the investigations of technology. One of the CETLD projects explored the use of MP3 players as a vehicle for delivering specifically designed audio files to enhance student learning in relation to museum collections. MP3 players were selected for their potential to provide a mobile learning resource that could be used by the student visitor in the museum. The student interest in hearing different viewpoints was particularly significant and had pedagogical implications. Earlier CETLD research had set out to explore and test a system of web-based multimedia educational trails intended to be accessed on mobile devices known as Personal Digital Assistants (PDA). These were issued by the museum, for use by students.
