ABSTRACT

This chapter describes three projects aimed at improving safety and security through design those are: a project delivered by a team of professional designers; a project delivered by postgraduate design students; and a programme engaging young people with no formal experience of design. The Design Council points out that violence and aggression towards frontline hospital staff have become a real problem. Drawing on the findings, the design team developed prototypes to test in real accident and emergency (A&E) departments. An impact evaluation of the design interventions was subsequently commissioned. A number of European universities have offered design students the opportunity to participate in crime prevention projects as part of their design education. While overall crime rates in England and Wales continue to drop, theft from the person continues to be a significant problem. At the professional design level, designing against crime can assist clients in solving complex problems that may be affecting their efficiency and user experience.
