ABSTRACT

Just as the life sciences industry shapes and is shaped by its social environment, it interacts in a similarly complex manner with its technological environment. And the technological environment itself is a tangled web of interacting developments. It includes those technologies with both direct, immediate impact on the sector (for example, developments in biological and materials sciences) and those with indirect, implicit impact (information technology and supply chain technology are both examples of this). It is those interactions that I will examine in this section.
