ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on some of several recent phenomena, in particular on the rising food prices and on possible explanations for such rises. If it is assumed that food security remains a primary objective of all governments, land, a rarer factor of production should not be used for bringing about a solution to our countries energy problems. The economic development of the Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC) translates itself by an increasing imbalance between world supply of and demand for agricultural and energy products. World energy consumption has been increasing rapidly over the years, it is still now mainly satisfied by fossil fuels, raising a series of issues such as the scarcity of fossil resources, their impact on the environment in terms of greenhouse gas emissions and climate change. The current enthusiasm for the development of biofuels as an alternative to oil and as a solution to the world's energy problems leads yet to another impossible trinity theorem.
