ABSTRACT

Project planning and tracking is a skill that was developed specifically for project management. The American project plan is the equivalent of the Project Initiation Document (PID) in the UK. On the basis of British terminology, The chapter uses the term project planning' to refer to activities such as identifying the main deliverables in the project proposal, identifying the project work breakdown structure (WBS), assigning work packages (WPs) to owners. Therefore in value-oriented planning, project planning starts by determining what indicators we can monitor in order to track the realisation of the business case. Typical Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) might include: percentage scrap rate', percentage rework rate', percentage customer rejects' and so on. Compared to product-oriented planning, value-oriented planning is more flexible to changes in the product specifications. Within higher power distance (PDI) cultures, organisational politics is strongly present and senior managers are expected to demonstrate well-defined results on a regular basis.
