ABSTRACT
The structure of organisations, is arguably the most influential element on the efficiency and success of project management. The functional organisation is an organisational structure that caters primarily for process and production. The Project Management Office (PMO) role was to plan, coordinate and track the design and delivery of breaking systems for Fiat autos. The product development programme of a new car had hundreds of projects under it. A project organisation is an organisational structure that has been modelled to cater for projects and not processes. Software development houses and event management agencies have very similar structures. The project' matrix organisation is a compromise between the functional and the project organisation, in being a mix of both. There are weak matrix, moderate matrix and strong matrix organisations catering for different extents of project management needs. The strong matrix organisation illustrated in Figure 10.3 resembles a functional organisation at first look.
