ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts of key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book provides the Great War still possesses a tremendous, evocative power across British society; it is capable of conjuring powerful, emotive images and ideas that resonate in the present. What can be discerned from an examination of how and why the heritage of the Great War is utilised is a demonstration of how heritage functions within a critical capacity. The cultural heritage of the Great War serves as a frame of reference through which direct assessments of current society can be made. However, whilst the heritage of the Great War is employed to critique contemporary military operations, it is also mobilised in a far wider context to draw attention to the failures or incompetency of authorities. Through the uses of the cultural heritage of the Great War, individuals and groups utilise and form themselves through forwarding identities.
