ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a number of different ways of generating ideas for potential solutions of the problem-solving process. In addition to using systematic processes for identifying potential solutions, it is also a good idea to have a better understanding of the full range of interventions that are available. Consequences-focused interventions are those that suggest establishing activities that can reward, measure or enforce performance. Enforcing activities means taking action to make sure that satisfactory performance is achieved. These will include strengthening or putting monitoring systems in place, and instigating disciplinary procedures. Work design interventions look at the way in which tasks are carried out and make improvements. Congruence-related interventions are those that seek to ensure consistency between all levels of the organization. Brainstorming is a technique that is often used to involve people in developing a list of responses.
