ABSTRACT

Indigenous religion is that of the people in the country which is affected by the expansion, common peasants as well as Christian-trained intellectuals. The broad sociocultural range of these people indicates that there is not one, definitive indigenous religion. Religion' has to be understood in a sense of a holistic concept of life: it is not a separable compartment of it, but expressed in actions of reciprocity and communication with supernatural' beings very similar to society and reflecting it. The Christian faith with its infrastructure and the new Christians, especially when they occupy important positions in society, may have a considerable amount of power. The protagonist of the text is Don Cristbal Choquecassa, the son of a God-fearing chief who had lost his Christian faith only shortly before his death, but had confessed himself before dying. Don Cristbal is said to have seen the ancient Andean deity Llocllayhuancupa and still to be alive when the story is told.
