ABSTRACT
The objective of this chapter is to assess the role and treatment of women in the penal system in Frankfurt am Main from 1562 to 1696. Three distinct subjects will be probed: municipal laws, criminal court proceedings and penal structures. The method consists of both quantitative and qualitative analyses, and comparative data will be furnished throughout in order to compare and contrast patterns of male to female penology.
