ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book focuses on Creative Sustainability in Post-Industrial Communities. This chapter highlights some of the ways that post-industrial communities are evolving alternative forms of cultural production and creative practice, that depart from mainstream models in their search for ways to improve the quality of life. Much creative economy planning in the smaller communities featured in this book mimic practices associated with larger cities, e.g. the promotion of cultural tourism or use of the arts to re-image and market downtown. At the First International Ecocity conference, held in Berkeley, California in 1990, participants professed a common desire to draw attention to the ways that cities had been built in disregard of natural principles. Art, cultural production and creative industries can boost economies and contribute to the quality of life.
