ABSTRACT
The first category of stakeholders is often the hardest to engage with as these individuals have no vested interest in the output of the process. For the first category, the cost engineer is a person who consumes their time with no obvious added value. In this category we can consider designers, scientists, researchers, engineers and other technical professionals. Of course, a cost engineer does have added value for this class of stakeholder, as cost estimates generated are likely to impact either their work or profession down the line; it is just that this link can be somewhat removed from the stakeholders’ day-to-day work. Consequently, it is the responsibility of the cost engineer to help this set of stakeholders understand the link between their work and the cost estimate, and why it is important for them to positively participate in the cost estimating process.
