ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a close relationship between ethics, social responsibility, and corporate governance in the framework of cosmopolitan business ethics. A milestone for development of business ethics and corporate social responsibility has been the UN's work to make the concept of sustainable development the basis for international politics and global development. Sustainable development is challenged by the fact that we have entered the Anthropocene age. This is a recent geological concept signifying that the impact of humanity on the environment of the planet has become more serious, because of climate change and other modifications of the natural environment by humanity. Corporate governance based on corporate social responsibility (CSR) implies that management and the executive board acknowledge their responsibility for good corporate governance. This should in particular happen in relation to the company's stakeholders. The management is exercised by using a program for values-driven management, ethics, or compliance that relates to the company's stakeholders.
