ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the corporate social responsibility (CSR) which originated in the non-profit sector and which has been advanced primarily by actors within that sector, that is, non-governmental organizations and social movements. Within the broad social movement against globalization, the aspect which is most relevant to the growth of CSR is the anti-globalization movement's objections against the diminished accountability, transparency and, ultimately, regulation of businesses. Globalization CSR measures include environmental and supply chain management, fair trade and issues around human rights and labour rights. Globalization CSR has had significant yet different impacts upon the way in which CSR is interpreted and applied within different national institutional contexts. The focus of Swedish Partnership is on human rights and environmental sustainability and on encouraging Swedish companies operating abroad to comply with international CSR guidelines and principles, such as the UN Global Compact and the OECD guidelines.
