ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the key issues that are driving organizational change for sustainability. It is only in recent decades that we have become aware of the extent to which the dynamics of natural systems make them vulnerable to human intervention. But in that relatively short period in the history of industrialization, it has become increasingly evident that the damage wrought to the planet is such that without dramatic change in the behaviour of business organizations and our individual behaviour as consumers, life on the Earth as we know it is unsustainable. For the sake of the ecosystem upon which we all depend for the ultimate source of much of our aesthetic understanding of beauty and for what is left of the remaining great wilderness areas of the planet (Mittermeier et al. 2002), we must question what we mean by business development. If we stop to reflect on what will be left for the next generation of nature in all its wonder, we can come to recognise that it is business that we must rely on for change, not just through the greening of a single organization but through the role it can play in interaction with other stakeholders (Jamison 2000). This chapter sets out more specifically the reasons why business and its networks need to come on board.
