ABSTRACT

The contrasts between the experience of using a computer and the general life of the school are clear. Looking at the screen and manipulating the keyboard gives access to an array of information but it is an individual task. The students are in a difficult position. They understand what they are expected to achieve in school, what the tasks are, how expectations can be met. They realize the importance of conformity, of fulfilling set criteria. Students understand that, while schools take computers seriously, they do not celebrate what students themselves find so appealing. The experience of computers in this context can only be understood through students' understanding of schooling as a whole. ICT is simply another part of school and is an experience like all others. The formal experience of school includes the distinct approach to ICT, like other lessons. Real learning is considered to be a different matter.
